TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Acer Laboratories Inc. (ALi) today (Feb. 16) announced it has licensed chip set technology for Pentium 4 processors from Intel Corp.
The license follows the first Intel licensing agreement for Pentium 4 chip sets with ATI Technologies Inc. of Markham, Ontario (see Jan. 19 story). At first, it appeared that Canada's ATI got a jump on its chip set rivals in Taiwan, but more licensing pacts are expected as Intel tries to pump up support for its Pentium 4 series against Athlon processors from rival Advanced Micro Devices Inc.
ALi said its new agreement extends the company's existing licensing pact with Intel for chip sets used with Pentium II and Pentium(R) III processors. The new license agreement grants ALi legal rights to design, manufacture, and promote chip set products supporting Pentium 4 processors for high performance desktop computers, said the Taiwan company.
"Today's announcement emphasizes ALi's commitment to provide our customers with cutting-edge technology," said Chin Wu, president of the Taipei-based company.
ALi did not release information about the timing of its planned Pentium 4 chip set introductions.
