Xilinx claims 8-million gate FPGA is world's largest, fastest

Silicon Strategies

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- An 8-million gate FPGA that can be clocked at over 400-MHz and I/O data rates of up to 840-Mbit/s is now available from Xilinx Inc. It has resulted from Xilinx moving its Virtex-II family of FPGAs to the 0.15-micron process technology of United Microelectronics Corp. of Taiwan, the San Jose-based company said.

Xilinx claims the XC2V8000 FPGA is the world's fastest and largest programmable chip available on the market and 73% larger than any competitive device available today. The Xilinx XCV28000 is immediately available but the company did not give a price for devices today. In the second half of 2003 the device is expected to be priced at $3960 in volumes of 10,000 units, the company said.

The XC2V8000 FPGA includes 104,832 logic cells, over 3-Mbits of block RAM, 12 digital clock managers (DCMs), 168 18x18 multipliers, and 824 I/O pins, including 412 differential I/O pairs.

"UMC played a fundamental role in helping Xilinx deliver this device into customer hands," said Rich Sevcik, senior vice president and general manager of FPGA products at Xilinx, in a statement.
