SANTA CLARA, Calif. - DSP Group Inc. has licensed the ARM7TDMI 32-bit microprocessor core from ARM Holdings plc for use in residential short-range wireless products.
The ARM7TDMI is a popular elaboration of the ARM7 core that includes the so-called 'Thumb' option allowing the 32-bit processor to be programmed with 16-bit instructions, which are expanded on-the-fly within the core to the original 32-bit format.
This can avoid the use of 32-bit wide memory, which in turn saves power, for a relatively low impairment of computing performance and has been used extensively in portable and battery-operated equipment.
"Having an integrated system-on-a-chip solution using the low power and high performance characteristics of the ARM7TDMI core and DSP Group's TeakLite DSP core make it a compelling product for our short-range residential wireless products, including cordless telephony, PBX systems, Bluetooth products, IP phones, hands-free car kits for the automotive, multimedia handheld devices and others," said Ofer Shneyour, chief technology officer of DSP Group, in a statement.
